Tejas — the radiant, luminous power of the self-illumined being — is one of the eight aishvaryas (divine excellences) described in the Bhagavata Purana as Ishvara's own qualities. Surya Deva is Tejas personified: the cosmic source of all physical light, all vital energy (Prana), and all soul-force (Atma-Tejas). The Aditya Hridayam — the "Heart of the Sun" hymn from the Valmiki Ramayana (Yuddha Kanda, Chapter 107) — was given by the sage Agastya to Ram when he stood exhausted before Ravana on the battlefield: "Worship Surya, O Ramachandra — He is the lord of all, the protector of the universe, the one who illuminates and energises all beings." After chanting this hymn three times, Ram slew Ravana.
This japmala invokes that Surya Tejas for every devotee who faces their own Ravana — whatever form it takes.
