Karungali (Ebony wood — Diospyros ebenum) is one of the most sacred woods in South Indian Saiva and Shakta traditions. This deep black, dense hardwood is known as the "wood of the gods" and is specifically prescribed in the Agama Shastras for Kali puja, Bhairava sadhana, Shiva worship, and protective rituals. The 108-bead Karungali Japmala carries the dense, grounding energy of this sacred wood — its black colour absorbing negative energy, its hardness embodying Shiva's indestructible nature, and its rare density (one of the few woods that sinks in water) symbolising the depth of unwavering devotion.
